New
Clubs:
This year
we welcomed 2 new Bowls Clubs, namely, St. Mary’s on the Hill Bowls
Club and Sacred Heart Bowls Club and hope they enjoyed bowling with
us. This makes a total of 54 Clubs affiliated to the Cork Zone –
I.I.B.A.
National/Ladies/Junior Zone Championships
The
downward trend of passed years appears to be levelling off. Total
entries this year came to 769 which is only 4 down on the previous
year. Maybe next year we will find ourselves in a plus situation.

An additional competition was added to the list of Zone Competitions,
namely, an Over 55’s Pairs Competition. This proved very successful
and enjoyable, and will become an annual event. I would like to
thank Hazel Payne for donating a Cup for this competition.
This year for the first time the Cork Zone Committee undertook the
running of the Martha Treacy Cup and Plate Competitions and The Peggy
Tucker Trophy Competition due to the dissolution of the Cork Indoor
Bowling Association. I am pleased to report entries for both
competitions were as good as in former years. Marymount Hospice
received a donation of €1,000 the proceeds of a raffle held during the
Martha Treacy Cup Competition plus the profit made on that competition
and St. Finbarres Cathedral Restoration Fund received €880 in respect
of the Peggy Tucker Trophy Competition. I would like to thank Hazel
Payne for co-ordinating both of these competitions on behalf of the
Zone, together with the Inter-Club Championship for the Frances Cody
Trophy.
The Christmas Fun Bowls Tournament was again held this year and was
enjoyed by those who took part.
Licensed
Tournaments
Licensed
Tournaments form a very important part of the bowling calendar, this
year 27 Licenses were issued.
Sports
Personality
I wish to
congratulate Hazel Payne of Sylvan Bowls Club on being awarded Sports
Personality for Bowls this year.
General
It is with
a deep sense of sadness that we record the death of Joe Butler,
Westgate Bowls Club. Joe was a keen Bowler and was a most generous
benefactor to the Final’s Day Prize Fund over the past number of
years. He will be greatly missed.
Before closing I would like to express my thanks to the Hon. League
Secretary Hazel Payne, Hon.Treasurer Danny Twohig, P.R.O.
MichaelO’Shaughnessy, Hon Secretary Curry O’Kelly and the other
members of the Zone Committee for their work and commitment during the
past season.
I
wish to thank Club and Competition Hon. Secretaries for keeping club
members up to date with competitions and what is taking place at Zone
level.
Hazel Foley,
